El nombre \"perisod\u00e1ctilo\" proviene del griego \"peri\" (alrededor de) y \"sod\u00e1ctilo\" (dedo), haciendo referencia a esta caracter\u00edstica distintiva en la estructura de sus patas. \nEn el continente europeo durante el Plio-Pleistoceno el Orden Perissodactyla est\u00e1 formado por las familias Equidae y Rhinocerotidae.
