Con este nuevo hallazgo ya son 25 las especies identificadas de grandes mam\u00edferos, y 35 especies de animales en total. Este oso es caracter\u00edstico de los yacimientos del Plioceno superior y Pleistoceno inferior europeo, siendo antepasado de especies de osos m\u00e1s recientes como el oso de las cavernas o el oso pardo actual. Se trata de una nueva especie ad\u00e9mica (poblaci\u00f3n no residente) al antiguo sistema de las llanuras fluviales en el que se localiza el yacimiento Fonelas P-1.
